Maritzburg United’s new signing; Andrea Fileccia is relishing reuniting with coach Ernst Middendorp and believes the KwaZulu-Natal team who survived relegation by a whisker last season, are in for a brighter showing next term.

Fileccia scored six goals in 11 appearances for Free State Stars under Middendorp last season before an injury put paid to his contribution to the Bethlehem-based team.

The 24-year-old Belgian striker said he started his professional career as a 16-year-old when he joined Netherlands giants, Feyenoord’s junior ranks. Two years later, he was playing first team football at Excelsior Rotterdam.

“When I was 18, I played for the first division team in Holland, Excelsior Rotterdam FC for two years, I then went back to Belgium,” said Fileccia this week. He then followed former Stars coach, Tom Saintfiet to South Africa. Saintfiet’s stint was short lived, but Fileccia stayed behind and made a name for himself last season.

“I got a chance to play under Middendorp, and I was doing well until I got injured in a derby match against Bloemfontein Celtic,” he said.

He said he is settling in well in his new environment at Maritzburg, and promised to do well.

“I am settling in and I am responding very well on the field. I want to do well here… I don’t want to set a target. I will take it game after game, and I think that the pitch will talk for me, but I am confident for this season.”

He promised the Team of Choice’s faithful a less stressful season following the team’s besieged stay in the Absa Premiership last term.

“What is done is done. Last season is gone. This is a new year and there are some new players. The coach knows all the players very well, and as players we believe in ourselves. We have a very strong team and the spirit is good. This season is going to be very different from last season,” he said.
