A 44-year-old American woman, who has been on the run since 2009, was arrested in a rental house in Brakpan, on the East Rand, on Wednesday morning by members of the extradition unit of Interpol, Brakpan Herald reports.
The woman was found guilty on three offences relating to fraud and embezzlement of funds from her employer in the US. According to information received, she was arrested in 2006 and was due to be sentenced on December 11, 2009, when she skipped the country and found a hiding place in South Africa.
In June this year, authorities in the US requested the Interpol unit to arrest and extradite the woman.
“The fugitive was arrested at her rental house on Wednesday, and she subsequently appeared before the Brakpan Magistrates’ Court,” Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Netshiunda said.
She has been remanded in custody until her next appearance on Thursday next week.
