Hawkers in Pretoria are mourning the death of one of their leaders.

A Tshwane Informal Traders leader has been killed, Pretoria East Rekord reports. Eliot Nkadimeng, who was the secretary general, was shot dead on Monday evening in Mostrolofi, Limpopo, the organisation announced.

“The criminals killed Nkadimeng in what appeared to be a hijacking. They dumped his body near a river,” his deputy Mary Ngema said.

She said a passer-by had alerted the police after spotting Nkadimeng’s body on Tuesday morning.

“The murder has left the hawkers’ body in a state of shock and confusion.”

Nkadimeng survived an attempt on his life in October two years ago, when unknown assailants shot him four times near his home in Nellmapius. He spent more than two months in hospital recovering. Even then the organisation believed the attempt on his life had been a hit.

Six months later, the organisation’s chairperson Shoes Maloka survived a similar attempt on his life. Just as Nkadimeng, Maloka was also shot immediately after getting off a minibus taxi near his home in Clarina, north of Pretoria. He had spent the day in the city centre.

Ngema said only the police investigation could reveal the reason behind Nkadimeng’s murder.
