DA shadow member of the executive committee for health Jack Bloom called the incident ‘shocking’.

Farida Gafoor, a 34-year-old woman from Florida, on the West Rand, Gauteng, whose vehicle was involved in a serious accident with a taxi yesterday morning, August 10, had yet to receive medical treatment by Thursday morning, Roodepoort Rekord reports.

According to the woman’s uncle, Shamil Fakir, the accident occurred at the corner of Goldman Street and 8th Avenue at about 8pm. Gafoor was taken to Helen Joseph Hospital with suspected spinal injuries and was not able to move. She also sustained a gash to her head. She allegedly has been lying on a wheeled stretcher in the casualty department’s hallway for more than 24 hours without receiving any medical attention.

DA shadow member of the executive committee for health Jack Bloom called the incident “shocking”. “The casualty department should prioritise serious injuries. This is seriously problematic and ridiculous,” said Bloom.

Bloom promised to take up the matter with Helen Joseph Hospital chief executive officer Raymond Billa immediately. Attempts were made to get feedback from the family as well as Bloom, and to contact the hospital for comment.
