Banyana Banyana ended their Rio Olympic Games campaign with a point after holding Brazil to 0-0 draw at the Amazonia Arena on Wednesday.

In a match that the host nation dominated with more than 20 shots at goal, it was the heroics of goalkeeper Roxanne Barker who made sure Vera Pauw’s charges leave South America with their heads held high.

The first opportunity of the game fell through Brazil’s forward Alves in the opening five minutes, when a lobbed ball was played through to her from the midfield, but the striker couldn’t connect well, leaving Barker to handle with ease.

Four minutes later, Banyana launched a very good attack when Jermaine Seoposenwe played Thembi Kgatlana through on goals, but the Brazilian goalkeeper Aline was quick to come out of her area, making a good save from Kgatlana’s shot.

In the 24th minute Barker was brought into action once more, this time around by the left-back Tamires when she hit a thunderous shot from outside the box, but the Banyana keeper tipped it out for a corner.

Devinha’s strike in the 39th minute beat Barker, but the score remained 0-0 with the ball hitting the posts.

The inclusion of five-time women player of the year Marta in the second-half was an indication that the host nation were looking to register a goal, but the Banyana defence remained solid.

The 18-year Linda Motlhalo got a chance to test the Brazilian keeper after some brilliant play by Refiloe Jane on the left flank before spotting the young midfielder, however her shot was not powerful enough to trouble Aline.

Kgatlana’s shot from outside the box in the 70th minute looked to be heading straight on goal, but Aline tipped the ball for a corner.

In the 75th minute, a ball inside the box fell at the feet of Marta, but the Brazilian women top scorer took time to take a shot, leaving the South African defenders to recover.

Brazil almost opened the scoring in the 82nd minute when substitute Fabiana found herself inside the box with only the keeper to beat, but a superb reflex save from Barker kept Banyana in the game.

The Brazilians piled more pressure on Banyana in the last few minutes of the game, but firm defending and great saves from Barker earned Banyana a point.
