The shooting at the Tongaat toll gate followed as thugs fled the scene of the Ballito CBD shooting, where a security guard was killed.

One person was shot dead and two others are in a critical condition following a business robbery in Ballito early this morning, reports the North Coast Courier.

Five armed men broke into the Mangwanani African Spa on Douglas Crowe Drive in the Ballito CBD at around 6.15am. A valiant attempt to stop the thieves from making off with the company’s computers left one security guard dead and another fighting for his life.

An Enforce security guard fired shots at the car as they were driving away. The thieves returned fire, shooting him five times and he died before paramedics could assist him.

An IPSS response officer who heard the gunshots ran to help. He also fired shots at the getaway car and was himself shot in the exchange of bullets.

The injured IPSS Security officer was taken to Alberlito Hospital.

Engen Ballito petrol attendant, Bongi Goba, said that he heard eight gun shots and that the shooting lasted for a few minutes.

IPSS Security’s Frank Labidi immediately rushed to the scene of the shooting.

“Minutes after I arrived, SAPS received a call of an attempted hijacking at the Tongaat toll. I proceeded myself to the toll gate and we found a white Mercedes with two different number plates and a suspect shot three times,” he said.

While there had not been a hijacking, the driver of the getaway vehicle had reportedly been unable to continue due to his injuries and his fellow robbers had taken off on foot.

Speaking from the crime scene at Tongaat toll, IPSS Medical Rescue paramedic Paul Herbst said the getaway vehicle was riddled with bullets.

“The robbers obviously tried to escape but the driver of the vehicle had suffered multiple gun shots wounds. He has been rushed to Stanger Hospital,” said Herbst.

Police are hunting for the four escaped men, but no arrests have been made.

The guard who was killed in Ballito worked at Enforce Security for four years and was a single father of two children.

Enforce Security director Anthony Feuilherade said they were on their way to inform the victim’s family.

“We are so sad for the lost of one of our guards. He was a good man. He lost his wife a year ago. He worked hard and was always pleasant.”

Feuilherade said that Enforce would like to start a charity drive to collect money for the guard’s children.

August 9, 10am:

A security guard was shot and killed, and another was left in a critical condition during an early morning robbery in the Ballito CBD.

A second shooting incident followed at the Tongaat toll plaza when the perpetrators where fleeing the area, reports North Coast Courier.

“Reports from the Ballito scene indicate that a shooting took place between security guards and alleged armed robbers,” said Netcare 911’s Chris Botha.

“Paramedics found a security guard still seated in his vehicle, after they examined the man it was found that he died before our arrival. Another security was wounded, and was transported privately to a nearby hospital for treatment.”

The public are requested to avoid these areas until police have completed their work and the crime scenes have been cleared.
