South Africa’s Under-23 team AmaGlug-Glug were edged 1-0 by Denmark in their second game of the Rio Olympic Games in Brasilia on Monday.

A strike by Robert Skov in the second half saw Denmark topping Group A with four points, while South Africa are last with only a point after two games.

Owen da Gama’s squad had a lively start into the game though, with the team enjoying much possession and were first to threaten at goals in the first 10 minutes of the game.

Keagan Dolly combined very well with Gift Motupa with the two players managing to get into the Danish side box, but Motupa was unable to finish a brilliant move after Dolly set Motupa up with only the goalkeeper to beat.

In the 19th minute, a cross from the right side threatened the goals of Itumeleng Khune, with Denmark skipper Lasse Vibe inside the box, however he couldn’t get to the ball as Khune tipped it out for a corner.

Lebogang Mothiba got a golden opportunity to give AmaGlug-Glug a lead in the 25th minute after Dolly seemed to have lost the ball which was played to him inside the box, however, the Lille striker was denied by the cross-bar.

Two minutes later, Khune was brought into action when Vibe was put through clear on goal, but the Kaizer Chiefs keeper made a brilliant save with the ball going out for a corner.

Dolly was steering a lot of attack for Da Gama’s boys, but this time around the skipper launched a powerful shot from outside the box only to be denied by the cross-bar in the 38th minute.

Coach Da Gama took out Tebogo Moerane putting on Menzi Masuku to add more power when going forward.

The midfielder’s presence was quickly noticeable, as he got involved in most of the attacks, but the were still no goals.

After a while of testing Khune, Denmark finally broke the deadlock when Skov connected with the ball from the right side beating the keeper on his near post to give Denmark a 1-0 lead in the 69th minute.

Three minutes later, South Africa got a chance to equalise after getting a set-piece from just outside the box. However, Motupa’s powerful take was parred away by keeper Jeppe Hojbgjerg.

In the 88th minute Dolly’s shot seemed to be going into target, only to see ball going wide.

There was nothing more the South African team can do to get an equaliser, as Denmark walked away with maximum points.
