Banyana Banyana skipper Janine van Wyk believes Sweden didn’t deserve to get maximum points in their opening match of group E at the Rio Olympic Games.

The Swedish bagged all three points thanks to a mistake by goalkeeper Roxanne Barker in the 75th minute, after she failed to handle a ball from a corner kick which was met by Sweden player Nilla Fischer. She slotted the ball home to give the sixth-ranked women’s football national team a goal which won them the game in a tightly contested tie.

“Unfortunately it is heartbreaking that we didn’t get any point against Sweden. I believe they didn’t really deserve the three points. But we have to leave this behind, rectify our mistakes and focus on the next assignment,” said the Banyana centre-back.

Van Wyk and company next face China in their second game of the group stages. The skipper is optimistic that they can come through with a win against the Asians, however it is going to be difficult for them.

“We know it is a very crucial match for us, we also believe we can get maximum points against China. Not that we are underestimating them, but I think we can compete well against them as they play similar football to us,” she added.

The Chinese lost 3-0 to host Brazil in their opening match on the same day. They current occupy last spot in the group, having lost by a bigger margin than South Africa, who are third on the table.

Brazil are on top having scored more goals than Sweden, who occupy second place.

The match against China will be crucial for Vera Pauw’s side to have any chances of qualifying for the next phase of the competition as the second best-team in the group.
