Fileccia scored six goals for Free State Stars last season before his season was cut short by his injury. The striker played under Ernst Middendorp at Ea Lla Koto and chose to continue his working relationship with the German coach after completing his transfer to United last month. Middendorp was sacked and replaced by Giovanni Solinas at Stars in the second half of the season, and United appointed Middendorp for the third time to help the club survive relegation.
The player says he feared for his career after sustaining the injury that kept him out for more than four months. The striker had options to stay in Europe, but decided to reunite with Middendorp at the Team of Choice.
“I left and went to Belgium after the injury, I didn’t work for about two months, doing nothing, I was just on the bed, then I started with the physio and slowly started working,” Fileccia told SABC Sports. “I was playing well with Free State Stars, scoring goals, now I had to sit and push myself to come back to full fitness.
“I need to push so that I am there at the beginning of the season on the 23rd of August, that’s my personal target. I had opportunities to play in Belgium, but when the coach called and said he wanted me I came back. Our target is to finish in the top eight, we have good players.”
