In the DA stronghold of Cape Town the party’s score had slipped, but there seemed to be no question of a landslide victory.

As counting approached the 60% complete mark, the DA’s firm early lead in the country’s most closely fought metros shrank slightly, but the official opposition was still lying on an outright majority in Nelson Mandela Bay.

It had 53.3% of votes counted in the eastern seaboard metro, compared to the African National Congress’s 36.6% at this stage.

In Tshwane, the DA was five percentage points ahead of the ANC with 45.6% of votes counted. In Johannesburg, the DA’s lead over the ANC was less commanding, with the party scoring 44.08% of votes compared to the ANC’s 40.75%.

In the DA stronghold of Cape Town, the party’s score had slipped to just below 70% by noon after sitting just above that figure earlier in the morning, but there seemed to be no question of a landslide victory.
