Kaizer Chiefs duo Itumeleng Khune and Eric Mathoho have been named in South Africa’s starting XI for their Rio 2016 opener against hosts Brazil in Brasilia today (kick off 9pm SA time).

Khune and Mathoho are the only two overage players in Da Gama’s squad for what is mainly an Under-23 football tournament. The pair only arrived in Brazil this week after playing for Amakhosi in Saturday’s Carling Black Label Cup.

Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Keagan Dolly will captain the side, while Lille striker Lebo Mothiba, the only Europe-based player in the squad, will lead the attack.

Brazil have a strong team, spearheaded by Barcelona sensation Neymar.

“Football is a team sport and coaches work very hard to produce a final product such as this one – but it is now up to the players to re-write the history of South African football at this level, it is also up to the players to write this exciting chapter in the books of their individual lives. However, they will only accomplish that if the play as a unit, as one team;” said South Africa’s coach Owen Da Gama.
