A total of 136 DA members have reportedly defected to the ANC on the West Rand.

The African National Congress (ANC) in Mogale City, on the West Rand, recently welcomed a reported 134 members of the DA into its ranks, Krugersdorp News reports.

The DA members have reportedly defected to the ANC on the West Rand over an unspecified period of time.

During a mini-Siyanqoba rally held two weeks ago in Kagiso, the ANC publicly welcomed the new members who have defected from the DA. Two more DA councillors from Randfontein have apparently also defected to the ANC, bringing the number to 136 in total.

ANC deputy secretary-general Jessie Duarte welcomed a group of former DA members, including former DA councillors Knight Mali and Mzukisi Ncamani, to the ANC. Ncamani bemoaned the “racism” within the party, while Mali had been previously suspended for bringing the DA into disrepute.

The councillors claim to have brought hundreds of DA members into the ANC fold.

The defectors later slammed media reports that claimed Nelson Mandela Bay Mayor Danny Jordaan instructed the municipality’s payroll division to continue paying their salaries.

City Press reported that the municipal corporate division head allegedly entered into discussions with payroll staff to authorise salary payments to the former DA councillors even though they were considered expelled from the DA and had subsequently lost their council seats.
