The grenade rolled under a pool table in the tavern before exploding, which is believed to have saved many people’s lives.

At least 10 people were injured at a tavern in Bergville, Rookdale in KZN after a grenade explosion on Saturday night, the Ladysmith Gazette reports.

The incident took place after an argument between two people over a beer in the tavern.

“The man who threw the grenade into the tavern had argued with another person after demanding that he buy him something to drink (alcohol). After he refused to buy him a drink, the man went home and fetched a grenade. After throwing it (the grenade) into the tavern, he closed the door and the grenade exploded inside,” said a bystander who asked not to be named.

Tavern owner Lindi Madonsela explained how the grenade rolled under a pool table in the tavern before exploding underneath, which saved many people’s lives.

But it was business as usual on Sunday morning, as people could be seen happily drinking alcohol at the tavern as if nothing had happened.

According to police, an arrest was made and the suspect would appear in court early this week.

The attack was purely related to a drunken brawl and had no links to the current taxi or political violence.
