The driver died shortly after being removed from the bakkie’s wreckage.

The driver of a bakkie who went over the Maidstone bridge while travelling on the R102 in KwaZulu-Natal this morning, was found to have suffered a gunshot wound.

The KwaDukuza fire department and paramedics found the driver, a man in his 30s, wedged in his car, North Coast Courier reported.

“Even with advanced life support intervention, the patient unfortunately died shortly after extrication,” said IPSS Medical Rescue’s Paul Herbst.

Herbst said besides the gunshot wound, the driver had suffered critical injuries in the accident.

The cause of the accident and shooting are under investigation by the police.
