Two men travelling in a VW Polo were flung from the car in a crash and suffered serious head injuries.

ER24 Spokesperson Werner Vermaak has on Monday confirmed that two men, believed to be 28 and 30 years old, were left in a critical condition after they were ejected from their vehicle on the R26 between Clocolan and Ficksburg in the Free State.

“Late Sunday evening paramedics from ER24 and provincial emergency services arrived on the scene where they found a VW Polo with extensive damage. Paramedics noticed bystanders gathering around the damaged vehicle,” said Werner Vermaak.

Some people tried to use large tree stumps to lift and stabilise the vehicle. One of the occupants had been ejected from the vehicle and his head was trapped underneath it.

“Once freed, paramedics found that he sustained severe head injuries. He was treated on scene and rushed through to Clocolan Hospital for stabilisation.”

Vermaak said a second person, who also had been ejected from the vehicle, was also found on scene.

“He was also in a critical condition with severe head injuries. Provincial emergency services stabilised him on scene and rushed him to Clocolan Hospital.”

Both men were later transferred to Dihlabeng Hospital in Bethlehem for further care.

The cause of the crash is being investigated by local authorities.
