Tackling unemployment will be Democratic Alliance Johannesburg mayoral candidate Herman Mashaba’s first priority should he be elected in the August 3 municipal elections.
Speaking to journalists at the DA’s closing elections rally at Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto, Johannesburg, Mashaba said South Africa needed change and only the DA could do that. “Unemployment is the biggest enemy. Families break up because of the high level of unemployment in the city.”

Corruption is the main public enemy and the DA would also prioritise speeding up prosecution of state officials found to be involved in corrupt activities. Mashaba has been campaigning for seven months in a bid to win the votes of Johannesburg citizens.
“There are about 180 informal settlements which the ANC government has forgotten about,” he said. He intended to speed up the process of giving citizens title deeds for their homes.
Mashaba dismissed ANC claims that the DA was a “white” party that would not gain votes from black South Africans.
“The 3rd of August is around the corner and the support comes from the traditional supporters; it is going to come from settlements and townships. We are not a party for whites, not a party for blacks, but a party for all South Africans. We are saying we represent the values of what [former president Nelson] Mandela stood for,” he said.

Had to navigate my way in and out of Dobsonville this morning: Burnt tyres and rocks, DA contesting my street and funeral processions!
