With eight days to go to the South Africa national Under-23 team clash with hosts Brazil in the opening match of the Rio Olympic Games, coach Owen da Gama is already going through injury concerns in his team.

Ajax Cape Town striker Tashreeq Morris and Highlands Park midfielder Mothobi Mvala had to sit out at training due to light hamstring injuries on Wednesday.

Morris and Mvala are not the only players who have been affected by injuries, with defender Kwanda Mngonyama recovering from an ankle strain, while Thabiso Kutumela and Phumlani Ntshangase are still recovering from tight hamstring muscles.

“We were advised by the medical team to sit Morris and Mvala out of the training session just to make sure that they don’t aggravate their injuries. We still have a few more days to ensure that all the players are 100% fit before our first game. Kutumela, Ntshangase and Mngonyama responded very well to training, but we had to rest them after a while as they are still recuperating,” Da Gama told SAFA media.

Meanwhile, Da Gama was impressed with defender Tercious Malepe, who recently joined the squad after his participation in national Under-20 Caf Youth Championship qualifiers.

“I was very impressed with Tercious Malepe, who arrived on Tuesday night but was able to participate in the whole session without any concerns.”
