Ten people were injured in the storm in the Botleng area in Mpumalanga, including a pregnant woman and three children.

Fifty RDP houses were wrecked in a severe hailstorm in Botleng Extension 5 (N12), at Victor Khanye Local Municipality on Wednesday, Mpumalanga News reported.

“The injured were rushed to the local Bernice Samuel Hospital for treatment,” said the municipality’s spokesperson Sentebaleng Masemola.

She added the municipality intervened by providing temporary shelter as a short-term intervention to accommodate the affected families.

Mayor Evah Makhabane and local councillors also distributed food parcels to the victims.

In a separate incident, a video emerged showing debris flying over houses after a tornado hit the East Rand on Tuesday afternoon.

The number of people injured, including in the structural collapse at Phumulani Mall caused by the tornado, has risen to 20.
