Pirates’ ‘coked-up’ player could get two-year ban

A bag of cocaine.

A bag of cocaine.

If he fails in his bid to challenge a positive test for cocaine, one Buccaneer will be at sea for quite some time.

SA Institute for Drug Free Sport chief executive Khalid Galant confirmed to Phakaaathi on Wednesday that a Pirates player had tested positive for cocaine from a urine sample taken from him on January 9, when Orlando Pirates drew 1-1 with Platinum Stars in an Absa Premiership match.

The player was informed of the charge on July 15, and has decided to contest the findings, though his ‘B’ sample has also tested positive. A hearing will be held on August 31.

“If he (the player) at this point accepts guilt, it would probably be a two-year ban, but he has decided to contest it in a hearing; he could argue that he believes it wasn’t his sample or there were extenuating circumstances to get a lower sanction,” added Galant.

Meanwhile, Kickoff has reported the alleged name of the player, though Phakaaathi has been advised that the player’s identity has not yet been made public.
