The delay was caused by a violent community protest in Kliptown, Soweto.

Train commuters travelling by train from Vereeniging and Westonaria via Midway to Johannesburg were on Wednesday morning left stranded due to a delay in Metrorail services. The delay was caused by a violent community protest in Kliptown, Soweto.

Making an announcement through an intercom system at the Midway station near Lenasia, a Metrorail official started by apologising to commuters, saying all Johannesburg-bound trains coming from the Vereeniging and Westonaria corridors were unable to proceed towards Kliptown due to the violent protest.

“Apologies commuters, our trains cannot proceed toward Kliptown station due to the violent protest. “Rocks and burning tyres have also been placed on our tracks.”

One train conductor said the trains were pelted with stones by violent protesters. Meanwhile, trains coming from Johannesburg are also turning at the Nancefield station.
