The Nongoma Regional Court in KwaZulu-Natal has sentenced three accused to life and 15 years’ imprisonment for house robbery and rape.
Mdaluyazi Sazi Mthethwa, 28, Sifiso Wiseman Sithole, 30, and Zamokuhle Lindelani Khumalo, 28, were each sentenced to life for rape and 15 years for robbery. The sentences will run concurrently and they emanate from an incident at Sqolweni area, Nongoma in February 2014.
A then 22-year-old woman was accosted by three men who took turns raping her and robbed her of a refrigerator. A case of rape and robbery was opened at Nongoma police station for investigation.
The investigating officers who dedicated their time making sure that they solve the case, arrested the accused in February 2016. They were taken to court and kept in custody until their sentencing.
Acting KwaZulu-Natal provincial commissioner Major General Bhekinkosi Langa welcomed the sentence handed down and praised Nongoma detectives for their hard work.
“This sentence will send a strong message to other criminals that all offenders will be kept behind bars indefinitely,” she said.
