Orlando Pirates have been dealt a blow ahead of the Soweto derby clash with Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday with news that their utility midfielder Thabo Qalinge will not be available for selection because of a hamstring injury.

Qalinge’s injury was confirmed by the Pirates medical team after he failed a fitness test and scan on Tuesday morning.

The midfielder is said that he will not play for the Buccaneers in the Carling Black Label Cup on Saturday.

“It’s unfortunate to be injured at a time when the team is getting together to prepare for the season. Whenever there is a new coach and new players, we all want to impress so that we can be in contention for selection. This is just bad timing, but it’s also how the game goes,” the midfielder told the club’s website.

“I’m still feeling good though, very positive. It’s a long season ahead so I’m working on being back as soon as possible. I’ve got a great team of specialists around me so I’m confident that I will be ok. Thank you to everyone that has been encouraging me in everything I’ve been doing so far, I’m working hard to be back for you guys as well.”
