Police divers recovered the body of the deceased from his blue car at a depth of about 15m.

Police are investigating the circumstances in which a harbour contractor died when his car plunged over the quayside at the Port of Richards Bay in KwaZulu-Natal.

Working in fairly clean water, police divers soon recovered the body of KP Qoma, 37, inside his blue Peugeot 206 at a depth of about 15m, Zululand Observer reported.

The car had reportedly entered the water in first gear “at some speed” and ended up about 20m from where it left the quayside at the corner of berth 701 and 609 last Thursday .

The victim was not a Transnet Port Terminals employee and exact details of how the incident occurred will be determined during the official inquest.

The investigation docket has been handed to detectives at the Richards Bay Police Station.
