A month and a half after nine-year-old Michelle Koekemoer was strangled in her bedroom at the Periston House apartments on Helena Lochner Street in Vanderbijlpark SW1, her mother, Soniya, allegedly made a confession in relation to the incident last Friday, reports the Vaal Weekblad.
Sonja Koekemoer (34) appeared in the Vanderbijlpark Regional Court today in connection with the death of her daughter.
Maroela Media also reports that the mother apparently admitted to police that she had killed her daughter. Police spokesperson Sergeant Gertrude Makhale reportedly told the media house that the mother was arrested on Friday after admitting guilt.
According to Vaal Weekblad, in her police statement, Koekemoer said she woke up that morning with a rope around her neck. She went to Michelle’s room and found Michelle’s lifeless body. She then went to her neighbour, Sebastian Slabbert, for help.
If the reports are now to be believed, she would have recanted from that somewhat confusing statement.
The case was postponed to July 28, when Koekemoer will officially plead. She will remain in custody until her next appearance.
