CORNE SPIES trains Jewel Quest in Race 7 at Flamingo Park today.

Of the 12 horses carded to run in the Kimberley Nursery (Non-Black Type) over 1400m at Flamingo Park today, only half have won a race.

In addition, trainers Corne Spies and Coerie Lensley train seven of the 12 runners, so they hold quite a strong hand.

Spies has been in great form this season and his consistency is borne out by the fact that he has saddled 151 horses at the track and 50.33% of them have finished in the first four.

Of the four horses he sends out in the Kimberley Nursery the best could be Zip Line. The son of Rebel King is still a maiden but he appears to have raced against a lot stronger on the Highveld than the others may have met in Kimberley. He has raced five times for three fourth places and two fifths. What is interesting is that Craig Zackey, who appears to have first choice for the stable, has elected to ride this gelding.

He will, however, need to overcome No 10 draw.

JP van der Merwe gets first choice at the Lensley stable and he has picked the ride on Strike Back, a daughter of Curved Ball. She began her career in KwaZulu-Natal with Doug Campbell but, after finishing fourth on debut on the Greyville Polytrack, followed by an eighth place at Scottsville, she was moved inland.

She had a moderate first start at Flamingo but second time out she made no mistake, beating Cat In The Hat over 1000m. She is bred to handle 1400m and should even improve on her maiden win.
